While I do think the revenue system with arenas hurts new players in that it takes a few seasons to really start building your team, you can definitely upgrade arenas pretty fast. I have a 15k/4k/500/35 arena, so 19535 total seats along with the 500k upgrade, and I started after the all-star break in S64. This is comparable to most teams in this league, even some of the older ones (like you guys mentioned starting around S57).

New players just need to know to prioritize building arenas immediately, be smart on transfer list, and have some draft luck. I was lucky with an inactive Div 4 league for a bit, which led to me having a good record which filled arena seats. I've also gotten some insane drafts as well even with some low picks.

I spent my first 7 seasons in iv.7, and the next 20 seasons in iii.15, during which I did most of my arena building. I spent time reading through the forums and listening to the successful owners on how to build, train, etc. Even now in my 65th season, I still experiment and play around with seat prices, team build, etc.

I guess, like with any game, you get out of it what you put into it. I enjoy the diversion, and if I succeed, nice, if not, oh well, try again tomorrow.

65th season is crazy! Definitely an OG of the game.

I agree with experimenting being fun, trying different things makes the game fresh. I typically like to play the transfer market and draft, training and selling players for profit. Eventually I want to build a team based around Princeton since its rarely used, or maybe even full court press but that'd require a deep squad.
