The argument of "well put your draftee's up for sale and buy the one who wished you got" holds no water. Who want's a 6' 1" center? Raise your hand, and I'll sell him to you

here I'll raise my hand!!

I buy and train him to be one of the best SF
He has got pretgy good inside skils. so he only needs to get some outside skills to play SF. As a matter of fact he will learn those outside skills relativley quick...

the idea is that the rating should tell you how good the player is at something on an absolute scale... so think of it this way... if you have a 6'1 guy with respectable inside shot, and a 7'1 inch guy with respectable inside shot.. what you've got is jason kidd and george meurson or shawn bradley. We wanted to make it straight forward to have people evaluate how skilled someone should be. Now... your 6'1 guy is gonna be an OK center as he is.. but he's never gonna be a premier center because he isn't gonna train "tall" skills as well as shorter skills.

your original point is very valid though... i think next season we will consider an altering the draft to allow teams to customize their scouting in a particular direction. Our constraints are that we figure out how to do it so that people can't share information.. as i hope the news item reflects changing it for this year wasn't possible simply do to too many other important things on the list. your thoughts have not gone unheard.

if you are really unhappy with your player i'm sure you can get sign. value for him on the transfer market and pick up someone who fills your needs better.

Okay thanks for clarifying and thanks too to GM JudgeNik as well. This was the missing bit of info that makes a bunch of stuff make sense. I suggest this tidbit about the height already being taken into account in the ratings should be made more clear in the rules. Yes, it says that height will affect training for inside skills, but it doesn't say that is its ONLY effect.

I would think I am not the only player who automatically assumed a 6 ft center would naturally be at a disadvantage on the floor manning up against a 7 ft center.

BB-Forrest, look at one of my earlier posts in this thread where I threw out several ideas for ways to hopefully satisfy your constraints. I knew nothing would be able to change for this draft, and am just thinking of the future here....Thanks for everything.

yes.. i remember the discussion quite well.. currently the best idea I have is to have users weight the various skills themselves and then rank players with regards to a sort of dot product of those weights with the real players skill.

if you don't know linear algerbra basically i mean a custom ranking that reduces the all the ratings of prospects down to one custom rating that is a weighted average over all the ratings.. and you get to choose those weights. So this way you can decide what sort of player you want to be ranked high, but don't get enough information to uniquely identify them.

This would also have the advantage as to map quite well onto a lot of the framework for the draft.

did you just imply shawn bradley has / had "respectable" level skill in something?? hahahahaha. the only thing he was proficient in was in somehow convincing Don Nelson he was worth putting on the floor. lol

He made for some great photo ops.

Thanks everyone for the diatribe. I learned a lot and I'm glad to see that the draft is being tinkered with. That was the one and only part of BB that I haven't been very pleased with. Everything else is great including the developers listening to suggestions.
