So, can any1 show an ideal arena size for D1 team?
I'm building my own so I can promote without being forced to battle against relegation.

Don't you think 7.5k lower tiers would be too much?

I've seen only a few teams with so many lower tiers.

Myself I think this looks best:
13500
6000
500
50

That is the arena that comes to mind. He won the Canada Title last season. A bit more lower a bit less bleacher.

That's one component of the evaluation, to be sure, but the thing I think is underappreciated is the relative cost of expansion as compared to your operating margin as you move up or down the levels. When in IV or V, it's much easier to both field a successful team and still have money left over for investing in infrastructure such as arena or scouting. The higher up you go, the harder it is to have much extra money left over and still be successful. The strategy you're proposing, aiming to expand after you go up, is perilous, as not only will you need to increase your payroll significantly in most cases to remain competitive, but you'd also have to find a way to expand the arena and to do all of this with a lower revenue base than your league competitors.

The way I've always thought about it is that since the seats are a fixed, one-time cost, it's easier to go ahead and get them earlier than later, within reason (i.e., there's no point to build up to a 20k arena while in IV).

Great points! Also, you get a promotion bonus when you promote, so it's easier to sell out seats and charge the highest prices possible following a promotion...so if you wait to add these seats until after your promotion, you are leaving money sitting on the table.

Also, As hrudey pointed out, it only becomes increasingly difficult to do things like Arena projects the higher you go in the game. I always tell people, it will never get easier than your first few seasons in the game. At this point (for me) there is simply not enough money to go around to field a competitive team, and continue building my arena. I was on a very fast pace early in my career building my arena, but my team started overachieving, and I promoted too fast, and found myself spending money on my team to keep that going, and now it's darn near impossible to free up any kind money to finish off my arena without hurting my performance on the court.

GM-Jason:

I agree to an extent that it is harder to add seats as you get to higher divisions. The math seems to indicate that it is equally good to tank your first season (building arena) with below salary floor as it is to advance to Div 4 with a decent team. After season one, its better to advance to Div 4. When in Div 4, its probably best to advance after one season of building the arena. In Div 4, you will probably run into a team that is better equipped than you to win a title (larger arena + more cash) so at that point its better to build the arena again and stick close to salary floor. Once in Div 3 I think that is where it is easiest to just pump into the arena for a season. Unless you haven't built an arena yet. But overall it does require a balance.

My first 3 seasons I was able to dump $750K each season into my arena. Last season in Div 4 I was able to dump 1.5 M. But the promotion bonus to my already built arena certainly helped as I was able to average the most sales of any team in my Division.

Overall, because the level of competition increases once you get to Div 3, that is where having a salary near the floor becomes more challenging. I will see when I get there next season. But I am betting that I can dump 1.5 M into my arena while making the playoffs.

I've already put about 500k into my arena since the start of this season, so I hope to be set up will to both compete and do well in my arena endeavors next season.

I would put every dollar you have into arena assuming your trainees are in place. Don't rush promotion, let it just happen at the lower levels. Are you anti luxury box? What gives?

My trainees aren't really in place but I'm going to work the draft because I'm not going to overpay for crappy players. I am a bit anti luxury box, but mostly because I am poor and I'm working on getting my lower levels to where I want them to be so that when I win my division I will profit more. Once this current expansion is complete I plan to get me some courtside and luxury boxes though.

Keep in mind. The consumer of the luxury box is a lot less fickle after a loss than that of a bleacher goer.
