if there's some new theory you've got, that's a different point. excluding things like elastic effect/cross-training/new theories that can make training effects non-linear, coco is right... training fits squarely into the linear systems analysis world of math/engineering.

I stand corrected. (hopefully the only victory coco gets out of this process )

which strategy would you recommend to managers who draft potentially valuable trainees? #1 obviously hurts the u21 to some degree, so do you have separate instructions for NT prospects vs u21 ones, as magiker alluded to? or do you think one of these is unequivocally better?

It depends...

If the person is training a specialty player or a player that is going to need more secondary training such as a LI PG or a PF or maybe even a R&G Center I would say to go with option 1...

however, as i stated before, specialty players aren't going to win us anything if we don't have them mixed in with what i call the meat and potatoes type NT players... so i would tell the majority of managers to train under option 2.

I love shot blocking. However I would push for great ID and if good SB comes with it then it is definitely a plus. Of your two models I would pick B but I really would like for triple 19s ;). And then of course the secondaries would be a key too.

Anyhow, let me ask a less strategic question. What skills have we been under utilizing that may allow us to compete with the best in the world?

My answer to this question is 2 fold....

For our guards i believe that IS is GROSSLY undertrained. Coco talked about stealing points to try to get us up there with the elite... having guards with IS i think would get us a minimum of 3-5 buckets a game as guards randomly get O-Rebounds and try to put them back in and are very rarely successful... If we had guards with say strong or better we would be drastically more effective.

For our bigs I believe its a combination of driving and free throws (for when they draw fouls). I've played around with driving and having more and less with some of my big guys... higher driving caused more fouls to be drawn (which could help us get other big guys in foul trouble) and they also shot a higher % from the field.

Also, I am very intrigue by SM's view on ID. Do you agree or disagree and why?

On the NT level I don't believe you can get your OD to a point that you can have the same advantage because you face multiple guards that are elite.... The reason it has worked so well IMO for SM is because he has a NT level OD going against teams that don't have multiple NT level guards if any at all.

JQA would be hesitant at first but would come around to it.... I say this because even though LI has become the most dominant offense in the game, our national team has arguable had greater success in the past with R&G. JQA was the type of guy to follow in the footsteps of his father initially and then become his own man.

Question for the remaining candidates, how much do you value shot blocking?

Which player would you rather take, and why?
Player A = 18/11/19/18
Player B = 18/18/19/11

B without question. To be honest though I don't like SB. The reason i say this is it absolutely KILLS salary. You get up to a NT level big guy (18/18/18 type) and every SB pop adds an extra 30k minimum per pop to salary. Not feasible to have all the inside skills and good SB on top of it from a training or salary standpoint IMO.

Do you not like SB because of the hit to salary or because you dont think its useful? There is obviously a positive to SB otherwise it would cost so much per pop. Would you rather a guy with 1SB to keep the salary down? Where exactly would you like SB at on a big?

as low as possible so it doesn't slow down the rest of the primaries and doesn't raise salary astronomically. To answer your question I don't like SB because of the salary. I won't argue that it serves some purpose, although i have yet to see anything that shows its worth what it charges.

Well, its definitely a very opinionated topic. Price wise it is expensive but in some cases it may be an option for us to have high ID, RB, and SB to stop the other opponents LI. LIs have many driving layups and shot]s by the opposing team and SB works well against those driving shots and I think even keeps a player from fouling so much. Good ID can only do so much but it cant stop a well built LI team alone. If we want to beat these LI teams we either going to have to make defensive beasts down low that can defend thpse driving shots or we are going to have to fight fire with fire and pump IS and JS and DR on our bigs and hope we win in a shoot out.

Like I said though it is a very opinionated topic butI feel we need to start thinking more about SB on our bigs if we want to win.

Sorry for typos sent from phone
