Welcome to Season 72

We opened with a one point scrimmage defeat to UAE. Good preparation for competitive play. I think we are in a better position than we were 2 seasons ago. We went 1-6 during the season 70 european championships and will look to improve upon that.

Our group looks tough on paper but there are a few winnable matches in there for sure and we will look to be competitive in every match where possible. All matches are neutral venue with the exception of England who benefit from home court advantage in this tournament.

Matchday 1 - Moldova
Matchday 2 - Ukraine
Matchday 3 - Austria
Matchday 4 - Serbia
Matchday 5 - Slovakia
Matchday 6 - England
Matchday 7 - Netherlands

Matchday 1

Moldova U21 0 - 50 Scotland U21 - WALKOVER

Not much to say here, we expected this would be a walkover given the manager had not logged in for a few weeks. We recognize our good fortune to have this game as first on the schedule and be able to conserve enthusiasm against what would have been a similar level opponent.

Matchday 2

Scotland U21 82 - 97 Ukraine U21 (84418) - LOSS

A solid performance vs a strong opponent who had the type of depth we can only dream of with the majority of their players at 9 Game Shape for the match.

We kept the opponent under 100 points and also kept the point deficit to a respectable 15 points.

Up next is Austria on the 25th May which is a winnable match.

Matchday 3

Austria U21 92 - 119 Scotland U21 (84422) - WIN

A significant victory which whilst not unexpected, really makes it clear the progress we have made. To swat aside the opponent on less effort and even winning the 4th quarter despite garbage time is pleasing to the tartan faithful. 3 of our starters were 20 year olds and will hopefully improve with a number of guys off the bench also being 20.

The match itself started evenly, after 1 quarter Austria held a narrow lead by 25-24. Our indiscipline contributed to this. However a 25-9 run to close out the half put us up 12 points after 2 and we killed the game early in the 3rd quarter.

Louis Adam (55158636) led by example despite his unremarkable 7 game shape. He was 8/8 from the field and had 7 assists with 2 steals and 2 blocks. This guy stays healthy and he has a shot at breaking some records for us!

Up next is Serbia who are undefeated. We will try and make it a contest but they are a powerful opponent who have already defeated England on less effort who also held Home Court Advantage which is no mean feat!

Matchday 4

Scotland U21 65 - 84 Serbia U21 (84427) - LOSS

A defeat that was all but expected, and we did not help ourselves by making a prediction of RNG tactic for the opponent who elected to play an outside isolation instead.

We decided to try and fight through their 3-2 zone going with the low post tactic. The first half was a very tight affair but the quality of Serbia came through in the second half as they ran away with it in the end. It is clear we needed a correct double GDP prediction so I don't hate the try despite it not working out.

George Aitken was probably our best performer in terms of effectiveness but once again young Louis Adam put up a good stat line.

Just incase anyone missed it, we are sitting in 4th place.

1 Srbija U21 4 0 314 271 43 1.000
2 Nederland U21 3 1 339 281 58 0.750
3 Slovensko U21 3 1 411 372 39 0.750
4 Scotland U21 2 2 316 273 43 0.500
5 England U21 2 2 352 325 27 0.500
6 Ukraina U21 2 2 338 320 18 0.500
7 Österreich U21 0 4 333 452 -119 0.000
8 Moldova U21 0 4* 266 375 -109 0.000

Matchday 5

Slovakia U21 77 - 97 Scotland U21 (84430) - WIN

Finally we get the marquee victory that we have been close to for a few seasons.

We went for a bold double GDP prediction of fast outside. The opponent went for fast inside so likely a negligible benefit to us. Some of our key players have hit form at the right time, exemplified by none other than Wadsworther who put in a strong performance at SG.

Our bench were ruthless when called upon, Barker McKenzie with a legendary 6 blocks off the bench has written himself into scottish folklore with such a performance.

Anyone who still chooses to underestimate us does so at their own peril. Please I ask all trainers to keep their guys in strong (8) or higher game shape as we make a final push in the final 2 matches.

Sorry for the few months without an update guys.

Matchday 6

Scotland U21 59 - 78 England U21 (84434) - LOSS

We were brought back down to earth in this one but it was no surprise really. Going TIE vs a Normal and against HCA was always going to be difficult and a 19 digit loss was not a disgrace by any means against a strong opponent.

We were suffocated by the England defence. You know it's been a tough one when young phenom Louis Adam didn't have a single assist!

3-3 record after this match. No chance to qualify but we would play for pride in the final match.

Matchday 7

Netherlands U21 80 - 65 Scotland U21 (84438) - LOSS

Crunch time vs Crunch time vs a powerful Netherlands side who had already shown their class in tournament.

We gave a really good account of ourselves and the match was much closer than the score line suggested with Netherlands only pulling away in the 4th quarter.

We finish with a 3-4 record and a 5th place finish which was a good campaign in my opinion. Thanks to all who trained players for us in recent seasons, you have done a great job.

Trainer of the year is thecabbage who trained 2 key players in our big men MacGruer and MacKenzie both 20 year olds who will be important players for us next year.

Scrimmages

6/6 in scrimmages with the scores listed below. We aimed to start at most 2 21 year olds and have a max of 3 21 year olds playing any significant minutes in the scrimmages.

All scrimmages were played at a neutral venue in Estonia

Ecuador U21 98 - 144 Scotland U21 WIN (85171)

Sakartvelo U21 88 - 109 Scotland U21 WIN (85223)

Hrvatska U21 83 - 128 Scotland U21 WIN (85278)

Hayastan U21 69 - 89 Scotland U21 WIN (85339)

Guatemala U21 94 - 108 Scotland U21 WIN (85374)

Ecuador U21 136 - 173 Scotland U21 WIN (85465)

Records

Season 72 - Louis Adam finished 2nd in scoring with 203 points and 1st in Assists with 95 assists. The 95 assists also was a joint all time record at our u21 level and it would take a brave man to bet against him smashing that record next season as well as the all time total assists where 76 is the total needed to take-over first place.

Allen MacGruer finished 2nd in Rebounds and Assists for season 72

Really good to see the 20 year olds featuring so heavily for this this season and we hope they can continue to improve on season 73 coming.
