GREAT 8 (PART A)

Lewie The Lip

Country Rank: 138
Roster Size: 10 players
Predicted Finish: 1st
Evaluation: The Lip has a fantastic mixture of skill in and out of the key! They are one of the most well balanced teams in the league. With the dominance of Jesus Rovira inside, the outside shooting ability of Xing Guancai and Jedrzej Gowin’s ability to put the ball in the hoop both in and outside the key, this team is among the elite and is certainly capable of division 2 basketball. But manager Lewie must be prepared to make changes in the near future, with most of his key players over 30. However, guard Marcal Redondo and new signing Candido Balmaceda, who is averaging a double double, should be around to soak up the expected success for a lot longer. The tremendous depth in the scoring department shows you why this team is such a force, with several players averaging over 15 points per game! The best of them being Jedrzej Gowin, averaging 24.2 points per game and Marcal Redondo with 18.2 points per game! Jesus Rovira is the team and league’s premier rebounder averaging 16.3 rebounds. As a result of all the scoring and rebounding options, The Lip averages 113 points per game, as well as 52.3 rebounds. They also have a magnificent assist to turnover ratio, averaging over 20 assists and under 10 turnovers which just shows how in sync this team is! The defence is also very good, with the team averaging over 6 steals and blocks per game. The Lip are sitting comfortably on a 6-1 record heading into the inter-conference battles and went 6-2 against the big 8 last season, if Lewie The Lip can march on and continue winning then they can assure themselves yet another conference title this season!

Perth City Kings

Roster Size: 17 players
Predicted Finish: 2nd
Evaluation: Perth was early contenders for the title last season going 7-0 in the great 8 conference to start, but unfortunately the kings were no match for the much stronger big 8 conference going just 2-6 in their next 8 games which then reflected back onto a poor second half of the season against the conference they went unbeaten against earlier going just 3-4, dropping from title contenders, to not even gaining HCA in the playoffs! Now as the inter-conference battles begin again, and a solid 6-1 start locked in, how will the kings go against what is again a much stronger conference? The kings will this time be hoping to capture some consistency on their way to a possible HCA in the finals! Perth is another team that has no real star, but amazing depth! Once again, age does come into play here, with a nice balance of young keen talent like Ervim Sezay and older experienced players like Alessandro Sarchiapelli. Alessandro is the team’s leading scorer at 22.3 PPG, and at 38 he is showing no signs of letting up! Other good contributors are Radosav Sofic (12ppg/11rpg) and veteran SG Nikolaos Kanavopoulos who is also a good scorer with 22 PPG. As a unit, the kings are a defence machine, with 10.9 blocks and 7 steals per game! They also pull down 48 rebounds per game and don’t even think about sending this team to the line, because they will make you pay with a 78% FT shooting! This is the point where things went downhill for the kings last season, can they pull together as a group and continue their winning ways or will they slide down the hill of shame once again?? We will see……

Great 8 (PART B)

Southern All-Stars

Country Rank: 271
Roster Size: 16
Predicted Finish: 3rd
Evaluation: The All-Stars were late to the party last season, coming into playoff contention mid-way through the season. The all-stars were the kings in reverse, going 1-6 in their first 7 games, then going 4-4 against the big 8 after a mid-season shopping spree, and then finishing strong going 5-2 against the great 8. This impressive mid-late season performance saw the all-stars gain entry to their first ever division 3 playoff appearance! This season, the all-stars will hope to go back to back, and this time go one seed better, jumping up to 3rd to make that first game a little easier. The team that the all-stars have now is even stronger than last season’s team. The all-stars are improving and growing every week under young stars Ashley Bibby (19), Roger Vaca (22), and Deddy Nurman (21). Older players like Faxildo Tejeiro (36) and Odisseas Genaralis (31) will be looking to mentor the younger boys throughout the season. Vaca is good enough to be in the starting five and be the teams go to man when it comes to scoring with 20.1 points per game and shoot a phenomenal 50% from beyond the arc this season despite his young age. Big men Edo Schotanus and Juan Ley are also key contributors, both averaging a DD per game on points and rebounds. The strengths in this team clearly lie in the scoring and passing department, averaging 24.4 assists and under 9 turnovers. The big problem area for the all-stars is the lack of rebounding fire power, averaging just 42.9 total rebounds! If they were to improve on anything then it would be rebounds. The all-stars are also excellent long rang shooters shooting at just under 40% from deep! If last season was anything to go by, then the all-stars fans are in for something even better.


Burnside Tigers

Country Rank: 212
Roster Size: 10 players
Predicted Finish: 4th
Evaluation: The mighty tigers stole second place late last season with a good run home; unfortunately, their fate won’t be the same this season. After doing so well last season, the tigers have gotten off to the worst possible start! Being just 3-4 heading into a tough string of games, it’s going to be very tough for the tigers to repeat last season’s success. This side is young, with just one of them being over 30. The tigers lack experience, and if you’re going to have a young team, at least have a full 12 players to send out every night, because in a long season, fatigue comes into play, especially with the younger players. Key big man Shavleg Chubinidze is leading the way with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Assisting him is Vincenzo Floridia with 18 points and 6 assists. William Bullock is also chipping in nicely with 16 points and 6 assists. As a unit this team is one of the best teams around when it comes to put backs, averaging 16 offensive rebounds per game. They also average 25 assists and as a team, shoot a solid 46% from the field. Overall, the Burnside Tigers will just be another team that is taking a step backwards this year. Nevertheless, it will still be enough to get them a playoff berth.

Great 8 (PART C)

Frenja Fireworks

Country Rank: 226
Roster Size: 9 players
Predicted Finish: 5th
Evaluation: Frenja narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season, with a 9-13 record, and I think that the same thing will happen this season. The Fireworks went 3-5 against the big 8 last season, and that just shows that this team doesn't have the firepower to get it done against the better teams. This time last season they were 3-4 and the fact that they have made no real improvements since, means that the fireworks fans are in for another long offseason. The fact that they only have 9 players does not help, even with some of the excellent talent like Steve Rochford and Simon Fatseas. This team is very similar to the thrillers, if they add more players then they would be legitimate playoff contenders, but for now there is no real direction for this team. Fatseas is leading the league in passing, with 9.1 assists per game, and Rochford is leading in rebounds with 17.4 and is also third in the league on points with 25.4 per game! If the fireworks just made a few more necessary tweaks to their roster then they would be right up there with the best. As a result of their small roster they only average 93.6 points per game, and their assist to turnover ratio is terrible, turning the ball over once every 2 assists. The only real amazing stat about this team is rebounds, averaging 53.7 per game. Division 2 is a lot closer than it looks with the right management for the fireworks, but we will have to wait and see how badly they want it.

Saleeba Globetrotters

Country Rank: 345
Roster Size: 10 players
Predicted Finish: 6th
Evaluation: The globetrotters will be the best of the 3 newly promoted teams in the great 8 conference this season, but only by a whisker. They will have to fight hard for the HCA in relegation series, and they will just get there in the end. With only the one star surrounded by what looks like selfless role players, this team should be able to pull through with the right tactics. Saleeba are a new team that are enjoying just their third season in history. This is their second crack at division 3 basketball, and inexperienced manager A.Saleeba will be looking for an extended stay this time round. The star on this team is Taiwanese center Rong Lap Kay who is in his prime. He is averaging 28.1 points and 15.4 rebounds, including a phenomenal 62 points in the last league game! He is the league’s premier scorer, and he can help this team to 6th place this season, and another crack at division 3 next season! If this man gets injured, then it’s all over I’m afraid, with no other player on this team averaging over 10 rebounds or points this season! This team averages a lame 85 points per game and they turn the ball over nearly 15 times a game. The globetrotters barely have enough to make it to 6th place, so if they would like to win silverware in the future, then they are going to have to bring some proper support. One player can never do it all!

Great 8 (PART D)

Dannys Boys.

Country Rank: 338
Roster Size: 11 players
Predicted Finish: 7th
Evaluation: Another relatively new team, playing their first ever season in division 3. They will be hoping to just avoid relegation by winning the relegation series, but it’s a big ask. Dannys Boys are only here this season because of teams going bot, but they have done better than most thought, gaining a 2-5 record to start. Whether this team has enough heart to fight to stay in this league is a tough call, but we know that this team is capable of division 3 basketball despite their inadequate promotion. Gael Joulie and Timmy Coghill are the two main players on this team while most of the other players seem to just be able to cope with the intensity of such a high level of basketball. 4 of the 11 players are over 30, and then there are some younger boys with good potential, there are many winning seasons to look forward to for this team, but a few more mature age recruits would pay off in the long run. Coghill is a dominant force inside, averaging 16.6 rebounds, and 21.7 points. And Joulie helps out with a solid 19.8 points per game. Aside from the two stars, there is no one else with over 10 points per game, which is why Dannys boys will struggle to stay in the league unless they make some necessary changes. As a team, they have a lot of work to do, with 17 turnovers per game, just 85 points per game and also just shooting at 40% from the field, the lack of depth is killing this team! With the goal of just staying in the league, Dannys Boys are in for a busy season!

aidzz panthers

Country Rank: 330
Roster Size: 10 players
Predicted Finish: 8th
Evaluation: The panthers have been bouncing around between division 3 and division 4 over the last few seasons. As they try and find a division 3 league they can settle down in, and start to build a strong roster to make an assault on division two, they have been unlucky enough to fall into one of the stronger leagues in the division! The panthers are going to have to try their best to win as many games as they can to hopefully avoid the slip down to division 4 once again. With a 1-6 start, things aren’t looking good for them as they prepare to take on the very tough big 8 conference. Players that will help them along the way are young gun Cristian Ingolotti and Jury Brytva who is currently injured. Cristian is yet to play a game for the panthers, but he scored 27 points and 41 points in his last two games in china, and will be an excellent inside presence. Jury is still recovering from an injury and it is not certain that he will play tomorrow night. In the 3 games that Jury played before he was injured, he averaged 32.3 points per game, this shows that the SG has tremendous shooting ability and can lead this team to some unlikely victories. It will be exciting to watch these two play together this season. As a team, the panthers are the worst rebounding team in the entire league, averaging just 34 total rebounds per game!! This is a league that has very good rebounders and with a low number like that, you cannot expect to last long. On the upside, the panthers defence is prolific with 16.1 steals per game and 8.6 blocks. The panthers are facing inevitable relegation, and they have everyone guessing…… how many games will the panthers win this season??

Your right with the age of a few of my players being into there 30's. It's something i'm tossing up with when to pull the trigger and get younger. But doing that will probably bring my player wages to go up if i get quality young guys!!! Another great rap up of the teams Lazz!!

But now the all-stars have to knuckle down and get ready to take on a tough big 8 conference.
I must say I was really shocked to see us lose to dannys boys. on saturday night! I thought that was gonna be a win for sure. Then I looked at the stats and saw that 2 of my starters fouled out early, my boys are a bit to keen sometimes!
