Why do you feel that being a U21 manager is different from being a normal manager?
I think that being an U21 manager does and should not only care about result, or a better word, the short term match result. For the match itself, I believe every manager who has been in this game long enough should be able to handle it after some time. The biggest difference is that you have, in SGP's case, 70-80 players in your hands. They are always there and you can't sell or buy players at your own will. You can only shape them. And you need to closely supervise not only the 21yos, but also the 18yo-20yo. You need to envisage what the U21 will be like in the future and what you want it to be like. Then you give specific advice to the owners. In previous seasons, e.g. the now 22yo group, we have 6-7 decent big men and outside players respectively. We even have 3 good SF. So this allows us much flexibility in terms of training guidance and also roster selection and tactics, e.g. center A may have better inside skills while center B may lean towards more a PF and has higher JS and DR.
This season, and maybe next season as well, we have less quality draftees. This magnifies another problem. If I just manage my own team, then of course I do all the training myself and there is little to worry. But dealing with a bunch of unknown managers is another thing. Some are not cooperative. Some barely know the game. Some hardly replies, leaving you a lot of guessing work. A lot of this work is like dealing with students. I have much experience in real life as well as in my past scouting job. This season we can't risk losing even 1 good trainee. The importance of scouting will be even more important and I am confident I can do a good job.
