The older he gets, the harder it will be to train. Also, JR training slows down OD training. Adding some JR may improve how many jumpers he converts (a little), but it wouldn't drastically make him better.
If you have your heart set on him being an SG, you may want to make sure he has 8+ JR when you finish training him (and I might be a little generous by saying 8). If you don't mind him being a PG, then his JR level won't matter too much.
