+1 is very often just in exactly that way, only negated of course, so I don't see the big difference. As long as you do not show the negative numbers for others (and perhaps not to the poster itself), I strongly believe that we will get a better rating that actualy tells something meaningful at least. right now it means almost nothing else than that people are posting a lot on certain forums.
Ok, I put down 5 replys here, 1, 2, 3 -1 and +1.
+1 and reply 1 is basicly the same thing, giving some idea of the thoughts behind.
Reply 2 and 3 could both be a -1, with the difference that only reply 3 gives us any idea of what the one that replyed thinks. I´m not sure if I managed to explain what I mean, but to me a +1 is quite clear what you mean, the -1 could be anything and can not be valid without explanation.

"I too, think that the +1 is very often used in the exactly same way, only negated. You are most certainly right that we would get a rating that actually tells something meaningful compared to the current system. And as you say the current system leads to excessive posting on certain forums."

"I dont think they are used in the same way. The ratings will not be meaningful compared to the current system. The current system does not lead to excessive posting"

"I would say that +1 and -1 are not used in the same way, just as I stated in my previous post. But I can not prove this and you might be right.
I do agree that the current system creates some extra posts in the help forum for example and it becomes tiresome to read (so I hardly read it at all anymore just like you it seems) for most experienced users. But it does encourage the users with questions to ask them and the ppl with the answer to give it. So the way I see it, the system is meaningful even if the rating is not."
