Hong Kong vs. Australia 103 - 97 (21942)A long awaited semi-finals for both nations. Winners would automatically qualify for the world cup while losers will see them facing a difficult route of second chance qualifiers for the world cup. There was nothing in the game right from the word go. Both teams wanted to win and was extremely tight all the way until near the end of the third quarter were Australia were able to break away to a 5 point lead just before the final break. Australia continued their momentum from the end of the third quarter right at the fourth quarter to build up a 9 point lead. Hong Kong would call a crucial time out right after an emphatic dunk by Vidas
(13436509) off another Walker
(14845673) assist.
The time out would turn the momentum in Hong Kong's favour where they drew level with a 13-4 run. It was back and forth buckets for three and a half minutes. With sixteen seconds remaining, Australia down by two had a chance to win the game. However a surprisingly early shot was made by the Australians with Lakhin
(13435558) taking a strong inside shot to draw level which went in and out. The game was over as Hong Kong was able to grab the rebound and were fouled. They made their clutch free throws and Australia could do nothing to comeback. At the end of the match, Australia's legendary small forward Wazza
(6863683) was seen in tears. Knowing this season will probably be his last in national colours, the fans gave him a final ovation.
This loss marks the end of Australia's run and were unable to defend their Asia Championship crown. They now face an extremely tall task to go through the world cup via the second chance qualifiers.
