To Sleet - my OD for my G's and SF is 7/8. I'm almost certain that my opponent is sticking with Motion. His guards aren't that great, but his center is a relative beast. I'm pretty certain to lose the matchup there.

Because of the advice which I've (thankfully) received, it appears that I can sacrifice my insides to shut down the perimeter. I was initially going to go m2m, but since I picked up a pretty ok SF from the wire (10k salary, outside based, for less than 100k!), it's perked up my stats that even in the tool I get the same team rating no matter which defence I use.

I think I've worked out the question I originally asked - the tool is really only for a basic guideline of a team's efficacy, but in general,as long as your individual skills are evenly matched through all the positions, the basic strategy as stated in the FAQ should be used.

All of your help has been greatly appreciated! This is my second season, having started 3 games into the 13th, I got promoted from Div 5 to 3 for this season, and I've won 4 games in the cup (fifth on Thursday)! I'm fairly enthused with this game, in it for the long haul!

Unless your C is a huge underdog compared to your opponents', I always advocate 1-3-1 against Motion. I can't think of another example when two different tactis create such a mismatch. It's true that they will have 20 offfensive rebounds instead of 5-7. So what? Their shooting percentage will almost always tank under 20%. I normally always let their C get 30 rebounds, as long as they shoot something like 17-95.

matchups are just somewhat randomized when using zone coverage vs m2m, so zones aren't exactly like real life. Although strong secondaries can set a PF apart, keep in mind that training a tall PF in guard skills can take a while.
