Here's the game plan for the game against Italia:

Starters

PG: Ken Simons
SG: Ismael Grubbs
SF: John Marcum
PF: Shaun Mueller
C: Basil Faust

Backups

PG: Qu Qihua
SG: Toby Corley
SF: Willis Serrano
PF: Dante Berg
C: Leslie Miller

Reserves

PG, SG: Travis Swafford
SF, PF, C: Colin Harrell

Will Not Dress

Eugene Bollinger
Marcus Michols
Reed Mcallister

Attitude: Playoff CT
Substitutions: LCD
Offense: Look Inside
Defense: 1-3-1 Zone

NOTES:

- Offensive strategy is to try to overwhelm Italy inside, hence the 4 centers in the starting five. We felt that going outside the box was the play here.

- 1-3-1 Zone selected to offset the lack of OD in most of the starting five.

not using the offsife anymore?

tough loss, how does the home court work there? played in USA but italy were the home team, did that mean that we lost the advantage?

Grubbs had the inside shots, just didnt make them for some reason, and based on the individual matchup ratings, hard to say why he didn't.

Lipparini scored most of his points on the backup Corley (who the coach put in ahead of grubbs who was supposed to start).

The tactic didn't succeed, but the indicators after the match make it confusing on whether it was due to the tactics or just bad luck.

No doubt, not having grubbs on the court more, at any position, didn't help the cause.

edit - forgot to mention, their two centers hit 3/4 from three against a 1-3-1 zone. Maybe they are really good shooting big men, and maybe it was yet another piece of game changing bad luck.

Italy is just too good. It was always going to be an upset if USA won. We have to remember this isn't a game of guts/glory, but a text-based simulation where we were odds on to lose.

Great run to the Semis though!

As in soccer, in basketball, Italy had really outstanding defense:

Perimeter Defense prolific (medium)
Inside Defense prominent (low)
