And then came the announcement that a 2nd team would run $10 regardless of whether you are a supporter or not. If supporter would have included a 2nd team then I would have been all over it. In fact I was about to take advantage of the DraftStreet promo assuming that supporter would include the 2nd team. But I'd rather just pay $10 per year to have a second team then much more per year for all of the other features.

As far as the excuse that they want to charge everyone to ensure Utopia is competitive, I'd say that the vast majority of supporters are already competitive and that an additional fee is redundant in that sense. I think BB is making a terrible mistake charging extra for the second team to supporters. Instead of $40 from me they will at best get $10.

Yes, they may be losing out on $30 from you, but if there are 2-3 non-supporters who wouldn't spend $40/year to get the entire support package in order to get a second team but are willing to spend $10/year just for a second team, that will balance out. Plus they $10/year from those who are already supporters who would like a second team.

Given the large number of non-supporters, the idea that they may get more people to buy a second team by charging everyone $10/year as opposed to making it part of the supporter package which costs $40/year has some sense to it.

But that means in order to just break even they need to sell 3 Utopias for every lost supporter or someone like me that goes for the cheaper option. Having the option for non-supporters to buy into Utopia is a great idea. Making supporters pay for the same option is terrible. In order to sell those $40 supporter packages they need to be worth it and I don't think a lot of people are going to say that the supporter package is 4Xs better than having a second team.

Why would someone who is willing to pay for supporter now no longer being interested in paying for it because of this? Your break even argument starts with a lot of assumptions that are merely speculation based on your assuming most people would behave exactly like you.

The idea that here are 4 times as many people willing to spend $10 for a second team than there are willing to pay $40 for a second team plus the current supporter features is largely untestable, but certainly not absurd. Given how many currently play the game for free, it's seems a reasonable choice to me.

And as someone who has been a supporter for over 4 years, I don't find there to be anything terrible about asking those supporters who want a second team to pay for it just like the non-supporters who want a second team. I actually appreciate it, as it means only those who are truly interested in a second team, whether they are supporters or not, are going to be members of Utopia. (I wish they'd come up with a better name, though.)

Your assumption that the support features and the second team have to be competing alternatives is simply false. They are two different products offer by BuzzerBeater. A person can buy one or the other, or both, or none.

The way the second team is being instituted, it really has nothing to do with trying to boost supporters. But it also doesn't do anything to lessen the value of the supporter package to those of us who consider supporter worth it's cost.
