Hi guys,

all my coach career I have been training tall players (C and PF). I would like to start training a guard position either PG or SG. I am aware of the fact that training PG and SG is a different story, however I would like to know what is the best choice. So, I would like to ask if is it better to train PG, SG or both at the same time in order to get the best improvement. Please, let me also know which skills are the best to train. Thanks for the answer in advance.

Josef is EXACTLY right. I've trained PG's and SG's for two seasons now, and I found that, out of the six skills, none should be lacking. I slacked off on passing early on, thinking that an outside focused offense would make it so I didn't need high passing, and it really messed me up. Now, however, I have improved the passing a couple levels a player, and it's made a huge difference.

One of my personal favorite training roatations for a guard training rotation is the following;

Pressure (PG/SG)
Jump Shot (Guards)
One on One (Guards)
Pressure (PG/SG)
Passing (PG/SG)
Oustide Shooting (PG/SG)

Several Variations of that one are also quite effective:

For the inside offense:
Pressure (PG/SG)
Passing (PG/SG)
One on One (Guards)
Pressure (PG/SG)
Passing (PG/SG)
Jump Shot (Guards)/Outside Shooting (PG/SG)
*in the sixth slot, I'd rotate. Since you'll get two rotations of a six-training pattern during a season (week off for All-Star Break, week off for End of Season, usually would do 1 FT, 1 Stamina a season) I'd do one training Jump Shot, one training Outside Shooting.

Of course the biggest question is how many trainees you've got. Personally i've got 4 guards i'm training max every week, and since they all lack OD i've been pushing that every other week, with either JS (Guards) or Passing (SG/PG) every fourth week.

For JS training u can choose to either train Guards, Forwards or Wingmen
For Passing or Pressure training u can choose PG, PG/SG or PG/SG/SF

Guard and PG/SG train the same positions its just the different training types have a different way of choosing the same thing.

Agreed, it doesn't really have to be that specific- you can jump around a lot to where your trainees lack.

I've actually done that for the last couple of weeks because my #1 trainee got injured, and while he was on the sidelines I brought my #2 and #3 trainees up a level each in driving because that's what they lacked. I'm gonna be doing that a lot for the rest of the season because I don't really have the opportunity to get right back into the rotation.

Thanks for your advices!

I see that your recommendation is to train two positions rather than one. Such thing requires at least 4 good trainees. I don't know if I can afford buying 4 so expensive players. I guess I will buy 2-3 young players, let's say 19 yrs old, which have already some training and then train them for 1-2 seasons and then when I have more money I will switch to the position training.

If you only have one or two decent trainees, then train just one position.

Once I scored a basket that still makes me laugh.

On not having cash for new trainees:

Do you still have your old trainees? How old are they? (the inside based ones) If they're still youngish and at a trainable age, perhaps you could sell them. Use the money to buy older (27+ age) players to replace them, and the extra on new trainees.

My first season I trained 3 trainees, bought some cruddy players to make up numbers.

This season I sold the non local trainees and I'm training 1 from last season and 2 more local trainees (one from draft, one I bought at TL)

And I still had about 500k left over from the sales of the two players that I'm dumping into my arena.

Long winded way to suggest, if u can cash in on your old trainees who can still be trained, you might just wanna do that. : )
