Hi folks, I`d like to hear your thoughts on this problem if you please:

I was promoted to division three this season. Now, there are some teams in my division that I simply cannot beat because they have players who are earning almost double what my players earn and because they are well ahead of me in the world and country ranking. I have already played two of the best teams in my league and received a good thrashing.

My question is this. When there is such a massive difference in talent and league record between me and my opponenets should I pick my weakest team to play them and should I reduce my the enthusiasm with which I play them? My thinking is that if I simply cannot compete with some of the teams in my league then I`d be better playing my best team agianst the weaker teams so I can hopefully stay in my league. If I play with less hussle against the better teams then I can store up some enthusiasm and use it to play harder against the weak teams.

There are teams that i know I cannot compete with but there are also a few that I feel I can beat.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Many thanks in advance.

That's a very interesting issue, which I also faced last season. You're right: you should pick the matches you can win (or at least compete) and use the ones you don't have a shot at to save enthusiasm and manage training minutes. In the end what will matter to stay up are the matchups against the other teams in the same situation

Thanks for that, you`ve confirmed my thinking. To stay up I need to beat the teams that are struggling near me in the league.

Many thanks.

How is this even a question? Isn't this the most basic element of strategy in any competition? You don't waste resources trying to win unwinnable battles?

No problem ;) . That's basically what I did last year. Identified the teams that were direct competitors and tried to win those games. Did the same with the matchups against the other conference. In the end I won 8 of the 11 "winnable" games. Throwing away some games does actually make minute management a little easier. Good luck ;)

Well, I`m sorry for asking such an unreasonable question in your opinion.

I just don`t like the idea of throwing games.
