Pilipinas U21 rolls past Prathet Thai U21, 125-64 (73987)

Beirut, Lebanon -- 6 players scored in double figures as Pilipinas U21 never looked back and took control all the way in a wire-to-wire win against Prathet Thai U21, 125-64. Dino Isaiah Libutaque led all scorers with 25 points and also dished out 4 assists. Pedro Mamaril wasn't gun-shy either in his first U21 start as he chipped in 22 points in 8 of 11 shooting, 4 of 7 from outside the arc. Lucio Fulledo was quite content in sharing the rock as he led the team in assists with 11, and with no turnovers.

Dejchana Wongthatip paced the Thais with 17 points while Maitri Prachadham got 11 points and 9 rebounds. The Thais are now at 1-2, which puts them at 6th spot and in danger of getting eliminated early.

Meanwhile, this win by Pilipinas U21 secures them a spot in the second round. They are now sporting a spotless 4-0 record. They still have 2 games remaining in the first round; against U.A.E next week, April 15 and Singapore on April 29.

Pilipinas U21 crushes U.A.E U21, 113-59 (73991)

Beirut, Lebanon -- Pilipinas U21 dealt U.A.E. U21 a huge loss, 113-59. Pilipinas U21 defense was superb in this game, limiting U.A.E. U21 to just 27.8% (25/90) field goal shooting.

7 players scored in double figures for Pilipinas U21, led by Luis Pacifico Castromayor with 20 points, while Dino Isaiah Libutaque chipped in 18 points. The new starting point guard, David Castaños, almost got a triple double, finishing the game with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists.

Allan Camilo Onganon did his best to stop U.A.E.'s best bigman, Shahriar Tibi. Onganon settled for 6 points but collected 13 rebounds, while Tibi led U.A.E. U21 with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Pilipinas U21 gets its 5th win in as many games, while U.A.E. U21 will sport a 2-3 record, and now in danger of getting eliminated.

Castromayor, Pilipinas U21 survives Singapore U21 scare to sweep the 1st round (73997)

Beirut, Lebanon -- Singapore U21 needed a win in order to give them a chance to enter the second round, and as expected, they were guns a blazing from the get go and kept the game quite close. But, it wasn't enough to dismantle Pilipinas U21 as the Singaporeans bows out of the tournament with a 106-95 loss.

Luis Pacifico Castromayor powers the Philippine-based team with 23 points and 9 rebounds, on 11 of 20 shooting clip. Xavier Lena added 19 points and 20 rebounds (9 offensive), while Juvenal Delvir pulled down 13 rebounds and scored 13 points. David Castaños notched his first double-double of the tournament with 11 points and 12 assists.

Yeo Jian Jin and Gandhapalin Krishnan led the Singapore charge with 23 and 18 points, respectively. Singapore U21 ends their campaign with a 2-4 record, while Pilipinas U21 record remains unblemished at 6-0.

Next week, May 6, will be the start of the second round of the U21 Asian tournament. The groupings and schedule will be revealed in a day or two.

Asked about the team's chances in the second round, Coach Leo replied, "We'll be in a group with very strong contenders, possibly with Hong Kong, I heard Australia lost the game vs China earlier, so the Aussies joins us here, and I think Malaysia will be in our group as well. Anybody's ball game at this point, but we're more than ready."

Aaaand the second round pools and schedules were released a few hours ago. We're in Pool D with Hong Kong, Malaysia, UAE, Australia and Japan. We're in for a rough ride this round, starting with the also undefeated Hong Kong U21. Lots at stake here in the second round: World Cup slot for next season and the very shiny Gold Trophy.

May 20 - vs UAE U21
May 27 - vs Australia U21
June 3 - vs Japan U21

Hong Kong U21 ekes out a close win over Pilipinas U21 via overtime, 90-81 (74594)

Beirut, Lebanon -- Pilipinas U21 was leading in the first three quarters, and then Hong Kong U21 mounted a furious comeback, and even forced an overtime. Indeed, these extra minutes were just what the doctor ordered as Hong Kong U21 gets the W over Pilipinas U21, 90-81.

Lui Bo Yi powers his way through the Philippine defense as he scored 32 points and added 10 rebounds and 3 steals, while Yeung Yuk Kin backs him up with 16 points and 6 rebounds.

Pilipinas U21 suffers its first loss in the tournament and will now have a 0-1 record to start the second round. Clodualdo Salinel scored 25 points and added 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Luis Pacifico Castromayor ended the game with 16 points and hauled 12 rebounds for a double-double. Both Salinel and Castromayor paced the team at the start as they scored 20 of the 22 first quarter points of Pilipinas U21.

Hong Kong U21's defense forced Pilipinas U21 to a measly 29.9% field goal percentage. "Credits to Hong Kong's wall-like defense, especially in the second half and overtime", Coach Leo told the reporters after the game. "Told my guys in the locker room, it's a disappointing loss, but we're keeping our heads up. Grow and improve from this experience and focus on the next game."
